Heavy rainfall and sealed surfaces are major challenges for city centers. Asak Flyt is a new permeable paving system developed by the internationally renowned architects Snøhetta in collaboration with the Norwegian manufacturer ASAK Miljøstein to meet current and future challenges in regard of water management.
The Flyt collection consists of three hexagonal interlocking stones that can be combined to create seamless transitions in designing outdoor areas. It allows smooth transitions between different users and requirements and up to 28 percent water permeability per square meter. The different stone sizes enable the creations of completely new, dynamic areas that stand out visually and give the impression of flowing water.
Due to climate change, intense rainfall events are becoming more frequent, releasing large amounts of water in a short space of time. This heavy rainfall can lead to flooding, as urban infrastructures are often unable to drain the water away quickly enough, and cities need to develop innovative water management solutions to prevent flooding. One solution is decentralised infiltration. It utilises rainwater locally and restores the natural water balance. As a result, the groundwater is replenished.
Public spaces in cities have to fulfil a variety of requirements as they are used by different user groups. A good design of these areas should take into account the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, recreational areas, playgrounds, green spaces and aesthetic aspects, and the challenge is to integrate these requirements in such a way that they complement each other and create a harmonious, functional and attractive public environment.
Snøhetta, the internationally renowned office for architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and brand design, has developed Asak Flyt® in collaboration with the Norwegian manufacturer ASAK Miljøstein to meet the current and future challenges of water management.
The Asak Flyt® collection consists of three hexagonal interlocking stones that can be combined to create seamless transitions when designing and programming outdoor spaces. The flexible system provides landscape architects with another powerful tool for nature-based water management.
S-shaped locking system to prevent rotation and increase surface stability.
The hexagonal shape allows for flexible designs and a greater number of contact points to ensure resistance and trafficability
Play with the three different stone types. They all have a 30 x 30 cm grid, but the different widths of the spacers mean that you can mix and match the areas as you wish: For pavements, areas with traffic or around trees. The smaller the stone, the larger the joint. This means significantly higher water permeability, but also, for example, an increased proportion of greenery in this area.

The percentage water permeability per square metre varies depending on the format.
Highly dense, homogenous architectural concrete surface.
The fine-blasting technique on the stone surface expose the high proportion of high-quality natural stone chippings.
A fascinating surface with velvety texture and a fine mica in monochrome colour shades with new EcoTerra technology. 100 % cement-free.
An international patented procedure gives an individual grain to the surface and makes each stone unique. With CleanTop® protection CF 90.
